Methodology
The calculator uses realistic UK carp fishing baselines derived from published feeding advice by Mainline Baits, Sticky Baits, Nash Tackle and Angling Times editorial. Formula:
- Starting bed: 0.5 kg per rod × density factor. Low-stock 1.0x, medium 1.5x, high 2.0x, pressured 2.5x.
- Top-up feeding: 0.3 kg per rod per 24 hours × density factor.
- Season adjustment: winter 0.6x, spring 0.85x, all-year balanced 1.0x, autumn peak 1.1x.
- Pre-bait multiplier: off-session feeding adds 50-100% to your annual total, depending on frequency.
- Cost: kg × per-kg price by tier (12, 15, 20, or 25 £/kg).
How to use the result
- Compare to your actual spend. If you fish 25 sessions and the calc says 40 kg/year but you actually buy 60 kg, you're feeding heavy - either intentionally or from wastage. Check whether the wastage is worth the extra spend.
- Model a bait tier change. Toggle from "quality shelf-life" to "premium freezer" and see the annual cost gap. Most anglers overestimate the cost step from Cell to Krill.
- Plan bulk buying. Divide the annual kg by 5 to know how many 5 kg bulk bags to order per year. Buying bulk cuts per-kg cost 20-25% vs 1 kg bags.
Common questions
Why do the numbers vary so much by water stock density?
On low-stock specimen waters (Redmire-style syndicates), 500g of boilies per rod as a starting bed can last 48 hours - there simply aren't enough fish to consume more. On pressured commercial-stocked day-ticket waters, the same 500g gets eaten by roach, bream and small carp within an hour, so you need 2-3 kg per rod just to hold a spot.
Does the calculator account for pre-baiting between sessions?
No - the annual total is the bait fed on the bank during actual sessions. If you pre-bait a syndicate water twice per week outside your fishing days, add roughly the same kg per week again to your annual bait budget. Pre-baiting typically doubles bait spend but multiplies session success rates.
How much does the season really change bait use?
Meaningfully. Cold water carp (below 10°C) metabolise bait 40-60% slower than warm-water fish, so winter sessions need less bait to hold the spot. Autumn peak feeding is the opposite - fish are laying down reserves for winter and will eat everything you give them. Summer sits in the middle.
What if I'm feeding particle (hemp, corn, tigers) as well as boilies?
The calculator covers boilies only - the primary bait spend for most UK carpers. If you're mixing 50/50 with particle, roughly halve the boilie kg the calculator suggests and add matching particle volume. Particle costs are typically 40-50% of equivalent boilie cost.
